Around 90 delegates attended the first Play Matters Seminar on Monday 4 March 2013 at Highland Council HQ in Glenurquhart Road, Inverness. It was great to see so many enthusiastic, like-minded people gathered in one place to talk about why play matters in Highland.
Councillor Linda Munro, Highland Council’s Children’s Champion introduced the speakers on the day including the keynote speaker, Dr Jim McKendrick, play researcher at Glasgow Caledonian University, who delivered an informative and inspiring presentation; his PowerPoint can be accessed here.
There was a choice of workshops including outdoor learning, community council involvement, the truth about health and safety, and ‘space for play’ which moved beyond the idea of a set ‘play space’ and looked instead at our communities and natural environment for ‘space to play’.
Feedback has been positive with lots of suggestions on how the seminar might be improved upon in future years.
